Untutored Life Drawing

A full day to work from an experienced model in our main studio full of natural light and equipped with easels and drawing boards, you only need to bring materials. There will be a very relaxed, informal atmosphere with plenty of tea and coffee at break times. The perfect environment to create a finished art work and maybe tackle a painting.

Bring a packed lunch to share.

 

Beginners Guide to Drawing and Painting

An introduction to drawing and painting for the absolute beginner. No experience necessary. You will be shown simple drawing techniques in the morning followed by an introduction to watercolour painting. After your delicious home-cooked lunch you will be shown how to paint with acrylics on canvas or board.

All your materials are provided and you will be given advice throughout the day on the best medium for you and materials for you to buy if you decide you want to take it further.

This is the perfect day for you if you are contemplating having a go at art, and why wouldn’t you. There is so much research out there telling us that it makes us happier, cleverer and live longer.

 

Simple Watercolour Techniques

An introduction to watercolour painting for the absolute beginner. No experience necessary.

You will be guided through all the steps needed to produce a simple but beautiful still life painting from how to stretch your paper to using resist mediums and salt techniques. You will be shown the differences in vaious papers, paints and brushes and how best to use them.

Bring watercolour paper, paint and brushes. If you need advice on what to bring please get in touch. Lunch included

 

Tutored Life Drawing

Life drawing is a fundamental skill for any artist (professional or otherwise) serious about improving their art practice.

Working from an experienced model you will be guided gently into a very challenging subject. You will be given step by step instruction and guidance on an individual basis to help you at every stage. We begin with some drawing exercises and progress onto longer poses.

Bring your own large sheets of paper (8 sheets of A2 minimum) or roll of wallpaper lining paper, charcoal, putty rubber

Easels and drawing boards are provided. Lunch included

 

Still Life – Oil Painting

A full day’s painting with comprehensive instruction on laying a ground, colour theory, mixing paint, use of a limited colour pallette and everything you need to know to make your paintings sing! Suitable for beginners to intermediates you will be guided through every step.

Coffee and tea breaks and a delicious home made lunch are included. Bring your own paints and brushes, low odour thinner and palette. Contact gill if you need further guidance on this. We have a large, fully equipped studio with easels.

Into Abstraction – Landscapes

This is the perfect day for those who already draw and paint but want to push their work into new and more interesting directions. It is a very structured course which allows for experimentation and the development of new skills with materials and processes. Bring along a landscape painting or drawing that you have already produced, Using that as a starting point we will use collage and different ways of applying paint to manipulate the image into something fresh.

most materials and equipment will be provided but materials you could bring include interesting papers, inks, paints and wax.

Bring your own brushes.Lunch is provided, let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.

Portrait Painting – mixed media

Working from a model we will begin with some short poses and exercises in the use of different media to produce depth, tone and line. After a delicious lunch we will bring some of those techniques together during a long pose to produce a detailed, structured portrait.

Bring whatever paints, brushes and paper (must be around A3 size or bigger) you have.

Lunch is provided, let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.

All our courses and events are run from a large, light and airy teaching space, equipped with easels, drawing boards and everything you need to help make your time here enjoyable. Where lunch is provided it is a home cooked, two or three course meal, usually vegetarian and organic where possible. Let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.

 

Gill is also delivering a series of Beginners Life Drawing courses in conjunction with the Berwick-upon-Tweed Educational Association

The first block of five begins on Tuesday,January 17th in the afternoon(The BEA courses need to be booked directly with the BEA bookings secretary).

For Saturday courses you can get a 260 bus from Berwick upon Tweed that drops you at our gate at 10.20 and we will always make sure you get home.

There are holiday cottages on site if accommodation is required.
